David Grubbs: Whistle from Above (Drag City) Signed Copies!!!
Had a great moment of interpretive imbalance listening to this, the latest album from David Grubbs, here in the shop just now at closing. Whistle from Above (Drag City, 2025) includes the many voices of Dr. Grubbs, though it is entirely instrumental.
One favorite, involves subtle (and not so subtle) play with the mix, foreground and background, obscure sounds and the crystal clear. This play happens in different ways on “The Snake on its Tail,” which had us a bit disoriented. Beyond the guitar, is that other sound coming from upstairs? Outside?” And “is the signal to the receiver cutting out?” Once realizing all was intentional, Grubbs proves himself the maestro again.
There is a track from many years ago where either Michael Evans or Dan Brown play drums. Forgive us, our memory is wobbly, but both played in various projects together and, separate from one another, on Grubbs solo Lps. On the Grubbs track the percussion is just total frenetic pummeling, but mixed in such a way that it’s totally self-contained and removed. In listening, always A/B’ing one against the other, in real time!!
Whistle from Above, folks!!
Autographed copies on-hand for much cheaper than on Bandcamp or elsewhere.
